St Philip's Associates

On the Feast of St. Nicholas, December 6th, Father Abbot Nicholas received 14 new Monastic Associates, and our first parish chapter, that of St. Philip the Apostle Melkite Greek-Catholic Mission in San Bernardino, CA. Among this group was our first clerical Associate, Father Justin Rose. Pictures can be found here. These Associates will spend the next three years in what we are calling a "novitiate" before making a final commitment to live as Monastic Associates according to their state in life.

Move Update

Many people are asking us: "have you moved yet??" The short answer is, no!

The longer answer is that, like so many people right now, we are having to adjust our plans in light of the economy. We have not been able, despite many efforts, to obtain the financing we need to make it possible to move to our hoped-for property in New Jersey.

Involuntary Sins?

Have you ever wondered why Eastern Christians pray so frequently for the forgiveness of "involuntary sins"? Here is Father Maximos' reflection on the question in the form of his MA thesis recently defended as part of his program at the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute, part of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.

Comments gladly welcomed.

His Grace Bishop John Michael (Botean)

"We Eastern Catholics have now reached the point of stability and maturity where we can offer much to the universal Church. The treasures of which we have to give are not financial, but of a rich spiritual and liturgical presence. I encourage Catholics of all traditions to support this appeal for The Anastasis Dialogue in order to help us, the "Eastern lung" of the Church, play its role in bringing more abundant life to the whole Body of Christ."

More photos from the nuns

Our sisters of Holy Theophany Monastery in Olympia, Washgington have sent some more photos from the recent tonsures there.

We have placed these photos here, in our photo album.

Most Rev. Salvatore Cordileone

"I have had the privilege of spending Holy Week and the Easter Triduum at Holy Resurrection Monastery in 2007. I believe such experiences should be made more available to every Catholic: clergy, religious and faithful. Please support the establishment of the Anastasis Dialogue so that the Orientale Lumen (the Light from the East) will be more accessible to all Catholics in the USA."

Tatiana and Anastasia: July

Latest word from Father Alin and Preoteassa Claudia is that the girls are still recovering from their latest surgeries. Unfortunately they have to battle some infections on and off. Please keep them all in your prayers. You can also help the family financially by clicking the "Make a Donation" button on the left of the screen and type "TWINS" in the item section of the Paypal form.

Mother of God, Searcher for the Lost

Somehow the text of this office has been left off our web site for a while. I am pleased to be able to republish it. Unfortunately, my original document containing all the scriptural references has been lost. In the future I plan to restore the references and post them with the full service, probably as a PDF.

Monks to Stay in California

Friends: although we must move from Newberry Springs, we have decided to stay in Southern California. Our attempts to move to the East Coast have simply not been succesful. The money is not there, which is to say that the Lord wishes us to do something else! We are so grateful to everyone who has tried to make the big move possible, especially the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New York and New Jersey. But it is not to be.

Fr Maximos at Holy Theophany

In early March Father Maximos visited our sister monastery, Holy Theophany, in Olympia, WA. The nuns hold an annual series of Lenten talks on Saturday afternoons, and Mother Anastasia asked Fr. Maximos to speak about the divine office.

Tatiana & Anastasia: August update

The news is not so good, I'm afraid. We have taken the liberty of copying a general letter from the Dogarus. Thank you for your prayers. Donations can still be made via the "Make a Donation" button on the left, just write "TWINS" in the item section of the Paypal form. More news here.

Dear family and friends,

Mission of the Anastasis Dialogue

The Anastasis Dialogue is the latest work embraced by the small community of Holy Resurrection Monastery. It is our way of responding to a call we have discerned to throw ourselves wholeheartedly into the work of "spiritual ecumenism."

What is spiritual ecumenism? From the Decree on the Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio (n.8):

Thanksgiving Day Service

Bishop George (Kuzma), formerly the Ruthenian Eparch of Van Nuys, was the hierarch who first blessed us to begin the monastery. His Grace believed very strongly that it was possible, even necessary, to take secular holidays like Thanksgiving and Memorial days and celebrate them as feasts of the Church. He believed that in this way our Church culture might engage creatively with the dominant secular culture with a view to converting it just a little bit more to Christ.

Come, Follow Me!

Few things are more critical for our Churches than solid Christian formation of adults, a formation that draws people toward their authentic Eastern tradition without making them feel like strangers in a strange land. This book, by our good friend and Melkite priest, Father Justin Rose, from the remarkable and growing catalogue of Eastern Christian Publications, is an important contribution from a gifted teacher and experienced pastor.

Recent photos, July 2007

Recently we enoyed a visit from some Texan friends: Brian McElroy with Fred Ellis and his son, Martin. Brian sent us these photos to be enjoyed by all.
