Abbot’s Homily at Mundelein

By Hieromonk Maximos | Filed in Monastery news

On Friday April 5th most of our monastic community went down to the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, IL where Abbot Nicholas served the Divine Liturgy to open the annual conference of the Institute on Religious Life. Abbot Nicholas was joined by Fr. Tom Loya, Fr. Stephen Mouth and Fr. Maximos as concelebrants. The choir of Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church, Homer Glen, IL did a marvelous job of chanting the Liturgy under the leadership of Karl Schudt.

Abbot Nicholas’ homily can be found here: Homily for Bright Friday

Our Lenten schedule is now posted here. With the permission of our Bishop, the Monastery observes Pascha on the old calendar. Palm Sunday is April 8. Pascha is April 15.

Tonsure of Sister Seraphina

By Hieromonk Maximos | Filed in Holy Theophany Nuns, Monastery news

In mid-November Abbot Nicholas traveled to Olympia, WA to our sisters at Holy Theophany Monastery, where he spent some time with the nuns. One of the reasons he went up was to tonsure a new novice, now known as Sister Seraphina. The tonsure took place in the monastery church as part of Great Vespers on November 20, the eve of the feast of the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple. As part of the ceremony, Abbot Nicholas formally presented Sr. Seraphina to the community’s superior, Mother Anastasia, as her spiritual daughter. Also present was the resident priest-chaplain for Holy Theophany Monastery, Archpriest Lawrence Gosselin, and the other members of the community, Mothers Irene and Johanna, as well as friends and supporters of Holy Theophany. Father Abraham Miller, of Our Lady of Zarvanycia Ukrainian Catholic Church in Seattle, WA, was there with a number of the parishioners from that church. It was a wonderful and joyous celebration of monastic commitment. May the Lord grant Sister Seraphina and all the nuns of Holy Theophany, many blessed years!

Here are some photographs of the event:
